Going green, my way. Bamboo forest hiking on Kauai, Hawaii 2006.

I’ve been waking up and writing fiction at 4am like a manic psycho, but I did peek out of my caffeinated hysteria to notice a few things this week:

Judge rules Army Corps of Engineers at fault for flooding during Hurricane Katrina. This is a big deal, and I haven’t heard locals jumping up and down much about it, especially since we seemed to be the only ones who actually believed it was a man-made disaster. So where were the mammoth headlines, the big coverage on the local news, or the passionate discussions? Not sure why this story fell flat, but I’m wondering if it’s because it diminishes Katrina’s power as the bogeyman of the anthropomorphic global warming (AGW) theory (more on this below), or perhaps that big government is incompetent and cannot be trusted (ooh, we can’t have that dirty secret getting out). Or maybe we’re just being lazy because the holidays are coming and the Saints are winning?

Mary Landrieu and the Louisiana Purchase. For locals, what she is doing is obvious, though it only benefits a small portion of LA. Americans will just resent us more. “she’s “solid gold real estate” for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid – who cannot afford even a single democratic defection if he intends to ram Obamacare through the U.S. Senate the way Speaker Nancy Pelosi narrowly pushed it through the U.S. House. Reid’s solution? Well, in addition to pimping fictitious budget and cost estimates related to the bill, he’s flat out bribing her.”

The Times Picayune is slashing the budget, and cutting loose very long-time writers. Shitty economies happen, and times change. Newspapers are dying, and like some species, it’s often nature’s will to make them extinct. Reviving them is just… unnatural. Still, I have a soft spot for all the writers over there. I’ve read the TP my whole life, and it will feel like someone died when they’re gone. Especially since many of us hung on their every word after Katrina, making the bond even stronger. I agree with a fellow nolablogger that they are getting the shaft in regards to a sendoff, and that their goodbye feels more like so long, and thanks for all the fishwrap. Or should we say crawfish wrap?

The global climate warming change monster was exposed as a conspiracy this week and everyone tried to pretend like they didn’t see it, cause that would be like, sooooooo embarrassing! I’ve said it before. I like the green movement for the most part. It works into my ideas on living in moderation and minimalism (and for those Christian folks out there it also works into the WWJD thing very well). However, I will NOT be lied to and bullied by assholes who use fake data and science fiction to scare the public into eco-commie policies. Frightening people into living by a certain moral code sounds an awful lot like religion to me. I want to take care of the Earth because I live here, and it’s the right thing to do, not because some hippie is on a Mao trip. Anyway, many folks are either quietly backing away, or flat out defecting, from the AGW theory now. Even liberal conservationist Robert Redford is airing the film The Great Global Warming Swindle on his Sundance Channel. So can we all agree to keep our little planet neat and clean and cut out all the bullshit? Heh, didn’t think so.

Sarah. Frickin’. Palin. For people who consider themselves the ‘intellectuals’ of the political spectrum, liberals can be some duh. With the arrival of her book promotion this week, the reaction is, well… an overreaction. The more libs viciously attack her, the more conservatives will defend her, giving her way more power than she has earned or deserves. I don’t have strong feelings about her like most folks seem to, but politics aside, I think she comes across as awkward, inexperienced, and a horrible debater (but I think this of Obama too. Teleprompter dependency much?). One tip I have for liberals is – if you find yourself calling Sarah Palin a stupid c*nt with a retard baby (when she’s pretty much done nothing worth mentioning), but get upset when someone calls the man who murdered 13 of his military co-workers an Islamokazi, then you’ve truly fallen off the humanity wagon. Time to find it, and climb back on.

Another view on the significance of the released emails. I tend to agree that lay attempts to decipher “inside-baseball” (i.e. highly discipline-specific) conversations without any knowledge of the context in which such conversations took place are usually pretty inaccurate.

OMG, you linked to The Washington Post! And I thought you were more of a Washington Times blogger… 8-)

Yes, I, too, have been entirely underwhelmed by the reaction of the NOLA Bloggers on the recent federal judge’s opinion regarding the government’s culpability in flooding St. Bernard and the Lower Ninth. I honestly think they have no idea whether the opinion is legally or scientifically valid and so they are all waiting for the other shoe to drop. Or, perhaps it’s because there aren’t any Chalmatians among the NOLA Bloggers. Do you know of any?

    Peace,

    Tim

Well, I saw plenty about it on NOLA.com, several blogs, Facebook, and it ran headline on MSNBC.com for about 12 hours. Though I think a lot of folks will hold their breath about the Corps decision until it is at least held up on appeal. That one is going all the way to SCOTUS, and it will take a long, long time. I think that has a lot more to do with it than fear of puncturing Global Warming or Governmet Efficiency narratives.

As for Palin, I’m giving back some personal finger-wagging and victory lap running on the part of my immediate family. My pops called me up very early the morning she was announced and boastfully declared the election over from that moment forward. Moms and little bro see Palin as some sort of populist messiah. There is little I could say that would drive them to support her further. My only remaining device is to shame them for wearing such spectacular blinders. So, yeah, there will be no pulling of punches on this topic from my neck of the woods..
