Gustav #17

by Pistolette on September 4, 2008

At about 6pm last night we got electricity back. We were convinced it wouldn’t last, but started cleaning up the inside of the house anyway. We swept out the leaves on the floors (from having the windows open for almost three days), turned off the generator, picked up the fans, reconnected the refrigerator, etc, etc… We had already cleaned up outside. It’s not like we had much to do after the storm passed and left us without power, so the backyard and driveway were already free of branches, leaves, and other debris.

Some time yesterday afternoon, when we were still off the grid and sweating from all the yard work, we jumped in the swimming pool (which was still blue, but full of leaves). Anyway, it was ICE COLD. Wtf?!?! We were all laughing and wailing about the cramping chill of the water on our overheated muscles. But damn it felt good.

Later, we made a trip to the Marigny for ice, ultimately finding it at an icehouse on Decatur St. which was selling it right out of the back door. My husband had chased down an Entergy truck for questioning earlier in the day, and he said that if all went well that we should have power before night. As soon as we got home from the ice trip, the power kicked on :-)

Anyway, now that things are relatively back to normal here, I’m going to go back to regular posting. There is a life outside of Gustav now, and last night I did a lot of catching up on the presidential election and other news. I even saw half of Palin’s speech before I crashed to bed. By the way, I couldn’t sleep. Finally I had A/C and couldn’t sleep. I figured that it was because I’d been on high alert for so long that my body needs time to adjust. I’ve spent the last week listening for weather reports, bump’s in the night, tornadoes in the distance, my baby’s cries. Now I can relax, but I need to shake that jacked up feeling first.

I want to say thanks to all of the people who visited here to read my dispatches, and e-mailed/twittered/texted me through all of this. I was genuinely happy to give reports, and check on houses for people. I hope they get power up to the rest of the metro area soon. I know how challenging it is without it, especially with kids. I’m looking forward to September in Nola – lots of great stuff to do around town this month!
